今西方哉 Masaya Imanishi
作家紹介
今西方哉は1947年、奈良市秋篠町に、陶芸家・今西洋の三男として生まれた。
1974年、京都市立芸術大学専攻科（現大学院）を修了後、重要無形文化財保持者（人間国宝）・近藤悠三に師事し、磁器染付を学ぶ。以来、奈良・秋篠窯を制作拠点として、伝統的な染付技法と独自の黒染付技法を用いた磁器作品を発表している。
1991年、文化庁芸術家在外研修員として渡米。アメリカ各地で研究と制作を行うとともに、アーチブレイ陶芸財団や大学、美術館などで作品発表やワークショップを重ねた。
アメリカ西部の雄大な自然との出会いは、その後の制作に大きな影響を与えた。樹木、土、水、風、音など、自然を構成するさまざまな要素をモチーフに、生命の循環と躍動を内包する「大自然のエネルギー」を表現し続けている。

1993年
米国ペンシルベニア州立大学において、准教授として教鞭を執る。
1994–1995年
米国アーチブレイ陶芸財団にて夏期制作を行う。
1997年
滋賀県立陶芸の森・創作研修館に招聘講師として滞在し、制作を行う。
1999年
米国南イリノイ大学にて制作および個展を開催。
2004年
米国モンタナ州ヘレナのホルター美術館にて個展を開催。
2006年
米国アーチブレイ陶芸財団国際展に招待出品。
2007年
米国カンザス州立大学に客員研究員として滞在し、制作およびネルソン・ギャラリーでの個展を行う。
2013年
米国バージニア州立ロングウッド大学にて個展およびワークショップを開催。

Masaya Imanishi
About
Masaya Imanishi was born in Akishino, Nara, Japan, in 1947, as the third son of ceramic artist Hiroshi Imanishi.
After completing the postgraduate program at Kyoto City University of Arts in 1974, he studied blue-and-white porcelain decoration, or sometsuke, under Yūzō Kondō, a designated Living National Treasure.
Based at Akishino Kiln in Nara, Imanishi has developed a distinctive body of porcelain work using traditional cobalt-blue underglaze and his own black underglaze techniques.
In 1991, he traveled to the United States as a participant in the Overseas Study Program for Artists administered by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs. He subsequently produced and exhibited work at universities, museums, and ceramic institutions throughout the United States, including the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts.
His encounters with the vast landscapes of the American West had a profound influence on his artistic practice. Taking trees, soil, water, wind, sound, and other elements of the natural world as his subjects, Imanishi seeks to express the cycles, vitality, and enduring energy of nature through porcelain.
Biography

Completed the postgraduate program at Kyoto City University of Arts.
Studied blue-and-white porcelain decoration under Living National Treasure Yūzō Kondō.
1979
Became a Full Member of the Japan Kogei Association.
1984
Published Yakimono o Tsukurō (Let’s Make Pottery), Bunken Shuppan.
1991
Spent one year conducting research and producing work in the United States through the Overseas Study Program for Artists of Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs.
1993
Taught at Pennsylvania State University as an associate professor.
1994–1995
Participated in summer work programs at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts, Montana.
1997
Worked as an invited lecturer and artist at the Institute of Ceramic Studies, Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, Japan.
1999
Produced work and held a solo exhibition at Southern Illinois University.
2004
Held a solo exhibition at the Holter Museum of Art in Helena, Montana.
2006
Invited to exhibit in an international exhibition at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts.
2007
Worked as a visiting researcher at Kansas State University and held a solo exhibition at the Nelson Gallery.
2013
Held a solo exhibition and conducted a workshop at Longwood University, Virginia.
